Officers assigned to the Thirty Meter Telescope protester blockade and encampment on Maunakea Access Road issued 329 traffic citations and arrested three suspects for five offenses on Daniel K. Inouye Highway during the week of Nov. 21-27, police said.
The 329 citations were for: speeding, 162; excessive speeding, seven; seat belt violations, 27; use of cellphone or electronic device while driving, two; excessive tint on windshields/windows, two; driving without a license, nine; driving without insurance, seven; unsafe vehicle, 10; other moving violations, 11; no license plates, nine; and regulatory violations, 83.
The five arrested offenses were: contempt of court or failure to appear, one; habitual DUI, one; DUI, one; driving after license suspended or revoked, one; and driving without insurance, one.
The combined total of the 15-week long Daniel K. Inouye Highway enhanced traffic enforcement that started Aug. 15 by the Hawaii Police Department stands at 7,241 citations issued and 69 persons arrested for 130 offenses.
The effort will continue for the duration of the ongoing protest situation for the safety of both motorists and pedestrians, police said.
